50% through, but I haven't gotten to the actual story of Kieu yet. Much of the book is a history and anthropologic lesson with regards to the period between the 15th century leading up to the authors era, as well as an analysis of key differences between this story and the Chinese original version that this story is based on.

Almost done. Been reading it to the 8 year old. She loves it, always wants a page more, and sometimes we get carried away and don't look at the time.
Lots of character development.

It's so current, that I'm not used reading essays and memoirs of its setting. This isn't recent history, this is like yesterday.

So many new shows and stories are set in times 2019 or less, just to circumvent incorporating COVID safety measures.;Being stuck in SiP protocols;Wearing masks etc.

I feel Mia's pain. Those diacritical marks cream lessons sounds no bueno. I can't for the life of me, have the attention span to get them straight either.
I can read a menu great. And some of the VN in this book Because of context and sight reading ( what English reading makes us learn really well). But could I write it back from memory and some kind of structured understanding of the marks? No.

I'm wondering if Mia's relatives's perspectives are accurate to the kids' perspectives there in VN.

I didn't get those questions from my cousins when I visited VN, but then again I was already a college graduate by then and had my Boy Friend join us on our trip with the rest of my family.

So I perused the list and I am bit annoyed by the lack of female authors. As such, I'm fairly certain I will start this bucket list of reading with the works from the female writers, since it takes being way better than awesome to make it in a male dominated list, that was curated by 2 dudes (4th edition)

Fast tracked this book on my giant list of 'want to read' works because my barely 11 year old highly recommended I check it out today when we went to the library to get us through the next couple of weeks.

I need to read a female voice after what felt like trespassing through my husband's mind from his adolescent years, as I travelled through Phuc's teenage mind in 'Sigh, Gone'.

I'm still waiting for the funny parts to roll in. I'm on scarlett letter, and it's not funny, it's heart wrenching.
Why do we explain, and rationalize, cruel and irrational behavior with PTSD. Is it for our own peace? Or is it our only way to forgive, or simply ignore - Because these things are quite hard to forget.

I had two semesters of Cantonese...can order dim sum, had an Asia pac minor and traped across the sea to do two semesters in HK at CUHK.

Wow, so well written so far. And I just got done reading chapter 3 to my 8 year old. It was filled with new vocabulary for her to hear and understand just by the context it was used in.

after chapter 4. my 6 year old daughter didn't want it read anymore for fear she might get nightmares of the manalonga

dammit...I stumbled upon a concept I can't visualize. what the heck is a wake? how does spacecrafts hitting space dust at high speeds leave a wake that grows to the size twice that of Jupiter? I googled and stumbled on WSF studies and wake space and wake vacuum concept but still can't picture what's going on. is there a video simulation to explain it?

have you've seen "girl meets world" after having watched pretty much all of boy meets world? ....well...it kind of feels like that.
