Men with full bellies don't run into the streets and rebel, and the fuller the belly, the less the inclination.

"I joined that small handful of educated Catholics who were not entirely accepted by the Anglos and was looked upon with raised brows by my own people because of my liberal Protestant schooling." This rings true for myself. Although raised Catholic, it was the Protestants in Oberlin who taught me to think and write. Nowadays, I'm no longer a Catholic but I never became a Protestant either.

There's a description of a shirt factory burning. The structure was a veritable fire trap. In the end, the owners blamed the victims, mostly women and girls, murdered the only person with sufficient knowledge and power to force a real investigation and scapegoated a random and harmless drunk whom they then proceeded to murder as well. Lovely these Protestant business overlords of British occupied Ireland.

- Why should people be rejoicing over all that bloodshed?
- Because they're aroused, Roger. Because they heard what they wanted to hear. Because they don't feel so abandoned now.

The protestants knew that holding the entirety of Ireland was untenable. They made a play to keep part of Ireland to themselves.

The description on how Belfast became industrialized and the efforts they went through tobdefeat the unions through the use of the Church (Protestant) and ethnicity as some sort of Catholic threat was very interesting.

Isambard Kingdom Beunel. A prolific and creative engineer: steamships, suspension bridges, underground tunnels.

Catholics were finally allowed to vote by the end of the 19th Century. The districts were gerrymandered and Catholic sections were simply loped off. It didn't end well.

One million died of hunger another emigrated. It was Irish from the US that kept the remaining Irish alive.

Due to the famine, many emigrated. According to the author, the English discriminated against them. That's the reason they were channeled to Canada and the US. I'm not sure. Apparently, certain lower ranks of the armed services were reserved for the Irish. I know they were present in the British Raj and even founded some schools and churches there.

1846 the Great Potato Famine. British Landowners were ultimately in favor of the population culling. They evicted the hungry tenants and shipped to England the meat and other produce with very little to no concern for the majority of the population. They bought the Catholic Church and used near destitute Catholics as a repression force.

I've never ended a rosary in my entire life. In retrospect, I'm glad I didn't. It's some bizarre Eastern self-hypnotic droll.

Zhukovka is the restricted secret city of the Russian oligarchs west of Moscow. Houses like palaces. Think Glencoe in Illinois or Highland Park in Dallas. Some are exceptionally beautiful. I wonder if the name is an homage to Marshall Zhukov.
