1846 the Great Potato Famine. British Landowners were ultimately in favor of the population culling. They evicted the hungry tenants and shipped to England the meat and other produce with very little to no concern for the majority of the population. They bought the Catholic Church and used near destitute Catholics as a repression force.

"I joined that small handful of educated Catholics who were not entirely accepted by the Anglos and was looked upon with raised brows by my own people because of my liberal Protestant schooling." This rings true for myself. Although raised Catholic, it was the Protestants in Oberlin who taught me to think and write. Nowadays, I'm no longer a Catholic but I never became a Protestant either.

There's a description of a shirt factory burning. The structure was a veritable fire trap. In the end, the owners blamed the victims, mostly women and girls, murdered the only person with sufficient knowledge and power to force a real investigation and scapegoated a random and harmless drunk whom they then proceeded to murder as well. Lovely these Protestant business overlords of British occupied Ireland.

- Because they're aroused, Roger. Because they heard what they wanted to hear. Because they don't feel so abandoned now.

The protestants knew that holding the entirety of Ireland was untenable. They made a play to keep part of Ireland to themselves.
