So far:
Chewing and swallowing: The sanctity of life of all people (not just of your nation), a healthy skepticism of the institutional church, creeds & traditions, a heavy value on seeking the truth and living by it.
Spitting: A rejection of the trinity, Christ's deity, miracles & that perfection is attainable outside of Christ's imputation of it.

A Scottish lawyer visited New England from 1827-1830 with his wife and shared his impressions and observations of many aspects of life: food, norms between the classes and sexes vs. in the UK, prison system in New York, politics - especially the Jackson/Adams election, noteworthy interactions with all sorts of people and where they lodged. An interesting portal into that area at that time!

That this isn't a better known, more circulated book is a wonder. It's so interesting: an easily readable account of a Scottish lawyer who visited the US in 1828 with his wife for three years. His observations of people and culture, especially from his British perspective.
