the opening to this is CRAZY good

it pains me to criticise anything VE schwab writes but like. alice’s chapters are almost unreadable. she’s supposed to be scottish but all her childhood recollections are about “yards” and “baseball bats”… Meanwhile her attempts to make her sound scottish fall kinda flat and feel like an american tourists romanticised version of scotland….. pulls me right out the story :(

I hate it when authors revert to the middle-school trope of girls hating each other because they like the same guy…. it feels so childish and immature, it’s downright unpleasant to read, and it was completely unnecessary in a book that focuses on magical dragons. Really detracts from the overall plot tbh

This was maybe the most predictable plot twist in the history of plot twists.

Scarlett is incredibly frustrating. Lots of sighing, screaming, crying “No!”, mooning over men whilst acting scandalised at her own thoughts, and doing the least logical thing in every given moment. It’s a shame because the worldbuilding does seem intriguing.
