1st third was repetitive. middle third has finally got to the point. neither mmc has depth enough to care much abt them as characters. fmc doesn't have enough depth herself to carry them. author has offered up gregory & nora as characters with more depth. one character is so ignored, i'm sure they're a prime mover, probably in subsequent books. world-building is still hugely lacking. overall, prose reads very basic.

I picked this up for the novelty. i don't read a lot of romance, but i do love a dystopia. i've some peeves already (hand-waving world building, i see you made it!), though. the fmc is 27 years old & reads like a teenager. the only way the writer seems to be able to express pensiveness in this character is by biting her lips. her poor chewed-up lips! get her some balm & an actual character trait!

so looking forward to getting back to this tonight. i have my theories and am loving following MacDonald this to conclusion. while i find some of the Surray family frustrating with their reticence, i want to feel like they'll be glad in the end to know what happened to Ruth.

this is well over 800 page so it's going to take a little while. especially since i'm reading in the mood to read some other things atm. but so far it's very good.

very good procedural; just slow going because I've been too busy to blaze though.

picked this up for the artwork but the commentary on the political necrosis is most gripping. I never get enough of the politics in the GFFA. does mirror the real world in deeply unsettling ways so... that's the part that makes it a not so fluffy read for my weekend. worth it.

i'm not feeling Seveneves love but it's still good. this is a world in extreme flux and it's being torqued to a dangerous level. as expected, between the environment, social media and just people being people... it's a lot. i care about some of these characters but don't expect them all to fare well.

OK BOOK, I AM SCREAMING INTERNALLY! there are also roaming bands of deadly feral pigs, oppressive temperatures and rising seas.

i've read too many prescient books and i'm still not recovered from Wendig's Wanderers.

#ThePlot I mean, maybe double check there's no faked death situation, Jake. bc, the guy in front of you has the physical attributes, mannerisms & over-bearing personality as the Evan you briefly were acquainted with. 👀

i think i'm reading this series more for the setting than the actual mystery. i love dropping in on Trafalgar & there's so much going on that the mystery feels more like a tertiary story (and funnily enough, i don't mind). not all the characters are sparkling but i like most of them enough to care what happens to them.
