This book put a spell on me. The son and mother were so beautifully imperfect, so horribly torn. The stories of their lives were told with such accuracy and grace by the poet that at times I had to sit and grieve.

Written by an atheist Jewish Harvard divinity scholar who treats literature as a sacred text, I could not be more into her essays.

I love this book so far. (I love this author.) I’m trying to read it while I have free time in our bookshop but we keep selling out all our copies- which makes me so happy!

I have put this on hold so I could go back to #2: Don’t Fear the Reaper. I love this author so much, and I appreciate his deep mine of trauma, mental illness, final girls/survival, and casting out by community. Can’t wait to come back to this novel.

I couldn’t finish this book- the writing was lovely, but there was no thread of joy.

This book is about power. It ties together the corruption of the medical establishment by politicians and the Church by demonizing women healers in society, starting with the witch hunts in the Middle Ages and ending with the contemporary state of medicine in relation to women’s rights. Good stuff.

I really had to work hard for 50 pages- there were so many new terms, the world she creates is very original- but it was worth it. Towards the end of this book, I started getting that LOTR feeling- that same sense of wonder and mystery, and the feeling that I could actually see and feel everything that I was reading. Bring me book two!
