Updates- still balancing reading with training. It might take a bit longer but I plan on reviewing The Rise and Fall of D.O.D.O. next (even if it's past it's release date!) Seveneves received mixed reviews and there seems to be a lot of anticipation building around Sanderson's new epic. Can the two authors pull it off? No updates yet -- still studying. Not just for one cert renewal but two. So, lots of forensics reading and research. But I'll be reading and writing again soon! (Hopefully before the end of the world.)

I'd love to be reading right about now. But instead I've been sitting here for 7 hours waiting for a hard drive to finish imaging, jamming to Krewella and listening to some classics. Don't worry! I promise to get back into things soon. ;)

The descriptions of the game's founders playing has me stopping every half hour to play. Solid research. Okay, sorry but I'll be back later. Got to go transform my werewolf now.

My reading has been slow lately due to studying for recertifications and some other things. But don't worry! If you see this, that means I'm still alive and still reading (maybe in that order, maybe). But anyone not on my Twitter, follow? @edgebookreviews :) too socially phobic to post a lot but working on it. Also want to give a shout-out: you GR friends have been such an inspiration to me. Thank you.

I can't say I agree with all of the winners of the GR Choice Awards. "Best Books of the Year" = popularity contest? No particular gripes (that would be very unprofessional of me!) But *cough* some of the SF/F...

Really great so far. A bit too much detail for too many time periods. The fast forwards feel abrupt. Also, first Tor book that has numerous spelling, style, and casing errors. So far smooth sailing, but Battle of Darkness feels like a translation. Mysterious metaphors, symbols, and clipped sentences meant rereading to understand the "why."

The stories are incredibly powerful so far. Moving, with beautiful prose. Some highlighting growing old, the passage of time, life, death, meaning, transcendence, etc.

The level of character depth and "world" defining detail is top notch. I didn't love The Baba Yaga (Weird Space #3) but The Star of the Sea is completely different. Is it worth the read? Review to follow.

"Better to go peacefully, rather than rage against the dying of the light. That way you might last a little longer." (p. 171)

Nice Dylan Thomas reference to "Do not go gentle into that good night." (Botteghe Oscure, 1951)

Very interesting so far. Learning a lot about the Chinese Cultural Revolution of the 60s and the Marxist vs. capitalist ideological fervor (then and now). Another reviewer is right, reads like Stephenson. No problems with Liu's translation.

What do you do when every story selected in an anthology fits flawlessly? Choosing a few to highlight in a review is tough! Thought provoking. Many pages of notes.

Outstanding so far. I'm really loving the characters their Victorian-era ordeals. The story captures the horror of immortality well (a topic many authors paint as rosy).

Fully realizing I said this before: Hollis is outstanding. 100% better than SC (although missing Tito). Hollis, her interpersonal relationships, thoughts on life, work, and society are all here. They are balanced well with Milgrim's... imbalance? ;)

A primary complaint I had with Spook Country was Hollis Henry's lack of character development. At least not to the extent of Cayce Pollard (or remotely close, as the narrative in SC has 3 "main" characters). But, man, Zero History corrects that in the first 20% of the novel. Awesome character depth. Loving Heidi and, yes, surprisingly our favorite addict.

Kate Reading's Shallan, at certain moments, is *very* creepy. Spoiler free. won't say where or when. Just that the audiobook supplements reading of the novel very well.

Just listened to Michael Kramer pronounce Rock's real name, Numuhukumakiaki'aialunamor, without missing a beat. :) I highly recommend the Audibles unabridged audiobook with Kramer and Kate Reading to supplement reading of the novel. And I'm not an Amazon spokesperson!

Hours of reading and only 15% but NO complaints. Don't let size deter you, fellow readers. One of the best fantasy stories ever written with phenomenal descriptions and excellent characters. I have pages and pages of notes covering all types of spren, vivid flora, crystals and shelled creatures. I highly recommend the Kindle edition for X-Ray and Cosmere Fictionary support.

After adult Jamie's character is established, and he runs into CDJ again, the novel is actually getting much better.

I'm trying again. The writing style is like diary and, while the author's small-town style deviations are cool, the story itself isn't. I'm really hoping it gets better. I'm still not sure if there's a character I'm supposed to like.

I'm still reading this but I really am enjoying every bit of it. Elantris has a tighter story than other works of epic fantasy by Sanderson. A clearer track of where the plot is going. Some slow sections but extremely well written.

Female characters on Sel (Shai from The Emperor's Soul and Sarene in this) are really outstanding. No sexism or portraying female leads poorly. So far the ladies of Elantris are strong willed, capable, determined and smart as hell. I hope she stays this way. Sanderson makes women right. A+ so far.
