My second time with John Gwynne, and I didn't love my first experience but everyone deserves a second chance and I wanted a kind of easy traditional fantasy

No joke there’s a character in this that is getting hanged and proceeds to do a backflip into his noose just to flex so yeah this is peak

I’m loving this series. So overjoyed i love a series that’s current and apparently keeps getting better

This is fantastic and Miki Berenyi is a rockstar

The Drake equation is referenced in this (they even say the equation) but they call it the "Drake-Roddenberry equation" which I'm pretty sure is a reference to Gene Roddenburry who made Star Trek. Which, like, cool, I love references, but don't disrespect my boy Frank Drake like that, he came up with the equation for aliens all by himself

Already loads better than book 1

Everyone talks about Don Quixote fighting windmills thinking they’re giants

No one talks about the crossdressing and the pooping and the Don Quixote getting naked to write poems

Truly an irreverent classic where literally everything is a joke

Reading even though I didn't like book one cuz I got drunk with my cousin-in-law and he was ranting about how awesome these books are and how they got him back into reading

So this one is for Corbin, in the hopes that one day i can get drunk with him again and actually get into it

Dawg at the 90% of this book it starts getting really really really into Inuit beliefs and like yeah cool and all

BUT DAN YOUVE BEEN SETTING UP A FIGHT WITH A BIG HUGE MONSTER THE WHOLE 800 PAGE BOOK WHERE IS THAT AND WHY AM I LEARNING ABOUT AAKULUJJUUSI AND UUMAANIIRTUQ NOW

This book should be read in schools it is amazing thus far and important and needed

Starts at a running pace - very much enjoying this so far

I’ve been on the same chapter for MONTHS cuz i was getting bored of this. Picked it up today and literally IN the chapter was a huge character death. I’m an idiot and Dan Simmons is good at pacing, I’m just simply bad at reading.

I actually REALLY like the ending twist because of how it recontextualizes the novel thematically

But it also breaks the novel and makes me so mad

Still the most infuriating book I have ever read - with the worst main character

Has all the subtlety of getting shot directly in the face with a cannon

I'm 99% sure I agree with the politics of this book.

I say that because I VEHEMENTLY HATE this book. It may be my least favorite book ever. I'm making my friends read it so I can rant about it to them. My review will be a billion pages long.

Obviously I'm going to finish it, but I don't think ANY ending can save this for me at this point, at least nothing I can think of. I'm sorry.

I love art that people care about and toil over (screw AI) and I am so freaking excited for the Laika studio stop-action movie of this. The trailers are beautiful and have led me to believe I WILL cry. So I am doing my due dilligence in reading this beforehand and everyone go see the movie when it comes out - the last few Laika projects haven't done well even though they're all amazing.
