So far, the most surprising thing about this book is how similar it is (in tone, at least) to Glen Cooks's "The Black Company".

It also has the same callous attitude to characters that Cook's book has, which is reducing my engagement some.

"When was the last time someone _didn't_ try to kill you?"

Time for a reread.

This book isn't working for me right now. The plot is a radical departure from the previous books, away from the basically cozy original style. And the constant hopping from one POV to another isn't helping.

I'm putting it away for a while and I'll pick it up again later when I'm in a different mood. We'll see whether that helps.

Approximately 50K words into this book, hardly anything has happened, and I don't care about any of the characters. I'm not giving this much more time.
