Congressional committee hearings are performative and often offensive. But what they aren't is single-party affairs. The first 40% of this book presents a single-party congressional hearing in the most annoying way. At this point, I'm really irritated with Stephen Hunter.

Note that this has little to do with the bias shown. Congress critters are born biased. But they fight with each other in contentious hearings.

Joel Rosenberg clearly did most of the writing here, since he used the same protagonists for this book as he did for the last three books of his own Guardians of the Flame series.

Fortunately, they work well in both places, and they're very strong characters, so it doesn't harm this book, but it was a bit of a surprise to see them again.

"...like running on the edge of a blade, success and failure on either side."

So jump off on the "success" side!

And thus we see the perils of just picking a half-remembered, cliched simile that sounds like it might work without understanding it.

Entertaining hard SF that vaguely reminds me of bits of Christopher Anvil's "Pandora's Planet".

Physicist's disease note: terawatts/second isn't a sensible unit in the situation mentioned in the story. The unit should have been just terawatts.
