Mamma mia, here we go again!

I'm hoping that this time around I'll be mature enough to pick up on the subtle (and not-so-subtle) critique of Southern culture which wiser people than I have told me are all over this novel. (Which is so very readable, btw.) They sailed over my head last time, you see.

It’s like one of those weird dreams where you know key details with certainty and it seems perfectly logical until you look back and are like, “where…. was my evidence for thinking that?”

I promise I’m still reading this. I’m just waiting for a snow day or something to give me the motivation to take it down from the shelf again.

So let me get this straight. The bad guy’s goal is to get his son to kill somebody. By making him fall in love. By kidnapping a girl and having him guard her.

I have no words, folks.

The Nutmeg
The Nutmeg is on page 151 of 208 of The Song of Roland
“Homer and Virgil alike he has outlived” (line 2616)

I feel like that’s a flex on the part of our dear old Anonymous Bard:

“Dudes this belongs on a shelf ABOVE Homer!!”

Dorothy Sayers: “don’t push it, buddy”

The plot: *kindly picks up the pace*
The author: *heavily implies that our hero has met an untimely end*
Me: *is dying to read the next chapter*

Welcome to the world of Leo Tolstoy, guys, where attaining spiritual enlightenment is a death sentence.

It's about forgiveness. Tolstoy wants you to understand no one's really responsible for suffering, it just happens, so you can't lash out in response to it like the French Gov't does to the supposed arsonists, you have to accept it as inevitable like Princess Marya, and if you do that...well you'll still suffer but at least you won't add suffering to the world. You gotta love, dudes. Even when it hurts.

"'You can love a person dear to you with a human love, but an enemy can only be loved with divine love.'"

To give context on that quote would be to give spoilers so I shall refrain.

Meanwhile, Captain Ramballe is highly endearing. I doubt he'll ever come in again but I loved him while he was around. (With a divine love as well as a human one, let us hope.)

Leave it to Pierre Bezukhov to wander into the hottest part of the Borodino battlefield on one of the bloodiest days in human history and not even know he's in a significant spot :P

Meanwhile, Andrei.

Andrei knows all too well.
