Book returned to library, must wait for my hold to come up again to finish!

Relieved to nearly be done, but my library loan ran out so I have to wait in queue for it again!

Okay trying to start this again. Finally made it through all the court proceedings and already enjoying it much better!

As with the first book, the side characters are absolutely carrying this book, but I don’t think it’s enough. The main characters are still incredibly annoying and disinteresting. Let’s drop Kingfisher and Saeris please, I just don’t care. Give me a book about Renfis and Carrion maybe. However, I don’t know if I’ll manage to see this book to the end. Too annoyed with the writing/characters.

I started this today and actually think this might be my first DNF for Naomi Novik! I’ve absolutely adored literally everything I’ve read of hers before this (Uprooted, Spinning Silver, Temeraire 1-3…), but I already find myself pretty bored by this “magical school” setting. No matter how novel the spin, the trope feels tired and silly. Maybe I’m just tired of YA too.
