Many consider this novel satirical, perhaps due to its extensive description of relatively mundane aspects of Wharton's surrounding culture at that time. However, she has crafted an unflinching portrayal of a lifestyle too decadent to be believed. Exquisitely written, Wharton's keen observations coupled with wry wit can engage even the most ambivalent spectator.
