I am stunned by the way Dreifus invites her reader into the lives of her characters. It may be the way she allows seemingly ordinary life to become disturbingly complex over the course of her stories through the context of its time. “For Services Rendered” maintains a composure I can only describe as "quiet" while allowing the momentum of despair to rumble in its characters, and in its audience.
