The thing for me is that for once, the characters are worthy of the adjectives the writer bestows upon them. Take this quote:
“LAURENT, [...] possessing an elaborate mind with a gift for planning, detached it from the petty intrigues of the court.”
It's not only a verbal description of the character, is that the author spent an entire book showing us that he is, indeed, possessing a mind unlike any other.
