I skipped the boring chapters. Does that still count towards my reading challenge? Cal and Mare bonding wasn't that much of a bonding after all. Author just threw them together and called it development. The protagonist hasn't suffered half of what some other characters have, and yet she seems entitled to a different type of woe is me that no other characters have displayed. I'm rooting for Maven at this point.

I'm too bored. I'm weeping. I can't keep reading. Bye.

I'd forgotten that this is my least favorite book in the series. But I'll trudge on, if only to see how Cal and Mare start trusting each other again, since I forgot.

Laurent is equal parts relentless and magnificent and I am here for it.

I'M SCREAMING.

I'M SO BEYOND OBJECTIVITY AT THIS POINT, IT'S NOT EVEN FUNNY. I'M IN THIS BOOK FOREVER AND EVER, I CAN'T. I CAN'T. I DON'T SEE IT BEING ANYTHING LESS THAN FIVE FUCKING STARS. GOODBYE.

The thing for me is that for once, the characters are worthy of the adjectives the writer bestows upon them. Take this quote:

“LAURENT, [...] possessing an elaborate mind with a gift for planning, detached it from the petty intrigues of the court.”

It's not only a verbal description of the character, is that the author spent an entire book showing us that he is, indeed, possessing a mind unlike any other.

The story quickly devolved into Vhalla's love for an aloof prince and the impossibility of their love. Any action was shoved to the back and the character development came to a screeching halt in favor of showcasing the impossibility and profoundness of their love.

Meh.

Still holding on to hope that it will get better.

I want to love Vhalla. I really do. She has so much potential, and her plot is very interesting, and the journey ahead is literally MADE for her to develop and flourish, but instead, all I've gotten so far is a fumbling, blushing girl who hangs to a prince's every word and just–no. Hopefully things will look up!

The flashbacks were kind of a pain to sort through at first, and it made the story a bit more difficult to sort out. The footnotes are amusing and give you tidbits of a well-fleshed backstory.

So far, it has a very strong beginning. The opening piques your interest, even though it's sad that they straight up declare the protagonist dead. Potential plot twist?
