Chapter Six: Saving Souls, Not Bodies covers a lot of ground, but the one aspect that stuck out to me the most is how elite Whites in Virginia drove a wedge between landless Whites and enslaved Black people by offering privileges, including pardons after Bacon’s Rebellion, to the former but not the latter. This was a means of ensuring the two groups would not join again in support of a common goal.
