I feel like I’m back with Dunnett and Sayers and Byatt. Is this 70’s intellectualism in light fairy-tale retellings? It’s been a long time since I felt a writer putting so much weight in every line. Damn English majors....

I’m really enjoying the explorations of First Nations philosophies and world views, while at the same time I am bothered by the author’s position as an outsider. On the one hand, maybe it’s a good introductory perspective to get readers interested and looking for books by members of the cultures discussed; but in the meantime how many of the author’s many confessed misunderstandings are we accepting as true?

Nothing like starting a new book and gradually realizing it’s a sequel. 😐
