To quote the protagonist this is a “Bad Girls Buddhist boot camp” that is so far, heavy on the foreshadowing. At least every 10 pages there is a line amounting to “before things changed” or “before the event.”

Very much living in anticipation for a book partially about staying present.

At this point there has been:
*cannibalism
*rescue by nomadic indigenous groups that realize the shipwrecked British are uncouth jerks and decide to leave in the middle of the night
*mutiny
*murder
*treasure stealing
*scurvy
*book publishing intrigue

Update: Stinky men on boats now playing Robinson Crusoe and day by day abandoning their morals. Lord Byron’s grandad is the only one still romanticizing being stinky man, formerly on boat.

Will seaweed and celery be enough? Or will they turn to cannibalism. Stay tuned.

Do I still hate maritime literature — aka smelly men on boats do adventure? Maybe not.

This book won’t be for everyone, but so far I’m obsessed with the setting, the satire of killing your darlings in a culty mfa program, and the “bitchy New England light.” I may need to reread bunny, now.
