The amount of detail in this book, even for someone who has read LHOTP series multiple times, has me doubting I can hang on till the end.

A little more violence than I can stomach atm

I was eager to share this book with my little ones so I had to heavily edit the content to make it more age appropriate, but I loved rereading a childhood favorite with them. My 5 year old especially loved it—and was quite satisfied with the ending.

So far feeling personally attacked and also very seen. What a reckoning!

I’m so disappointed. I loved Oil & Marble and had high expectations for this book. I can’t stand the narrator constantly addressing the reader & asking questions. The writing is basic, repetitive and casual in way incongruent with the time period. I’m finishing it for book club but would be tempted to stop now otherwise.

I don’t think I can finish this. So slow.

Any knowledge gained from this book would be better consumed in article form. Scattered, redundant, and fell short of what it could have been.

I’m not going to finish this book. Maybe I’ll come back to it, and maybe I’m just in too serious of a mood, but it just seems like endless glitter-covered chatter and addressing the listener in an over-familiar way. Very Jen Sincero. Not for me. I think I’ve gotten what I need from this book: journal & treat yourself.

I started this for a book club and I’ve decided not to finish. Its cobbled together style collected from various accounts of people the author insists are discreet annoys me, and it’s very clearly partisan (which came as no surprise when I found out the author is now on Fox). I’d rather read biographies of the presidents and First Ladies than a book of observations about them.

I should have seen the other books the author wrote and it would’ve given me a hint not to read: poorly written harlequin romance. Lazy, trite writing. “That’s the thing about (insert and word: death, sisters, family, love)”—she uses that phrase at least 10 times. Cliches all over the place and the exact mirroring of the current and past plot is too obvious.

“Money cannot buy happiness, but it buys the conditions for happiness: time, occasional freedoms from constant worry, a moment of breath to plan for the future, and the ability to be generous.”

I hated the first book of his I read, so I decided to give him another chance, but I’m realizing I just really dislike Stephen King’s writing style. This is my second book of his and probably my last.

America: please read this gem! An eloquent highlight reel capturing what the title promises: The American Spirit.
