Books written from a third-person/omniscient point of view are often tremendously impersonal, cold and distant to me. Roots, is written in such a way...
The descriptions are well-done, but it's not making me feel anything. The characters are quite flat, and the writing feels more like a historical journal, rather than a novel. Moreover, it doesn't have a plot. Every chapter is just a random anecdote.
