It certainly speaks for the era in which it was written.

Unfortunately, although the author captivates the reader in the beginning, the enormous suspension of disbelief required for DoM is a moat around the story. It's very difficult for a story to keep hold of you when every other detail breaks the trance.

I got this in a batch of free books from Curiosity Quills, which have so far all proved disappointments. "The Department of Magic" is the reason these tiny Kindle publishers are still around. Most of what they put out is crap, but every once in a while, you'll find a gem hidden among the trash.

Ch. 1 did its job. I'm drawn in.

Awful. On the fifth chapter, and the author hasn't given me a single reason to keep reading. The writing is stuffed with heavy description that doesn't describe anything that advances the story. The only possible purpose is to draw attention away from the few events that could resemble a plot. I'm sure (not really) that everything gets explained at some point later on, but I don't really care.
