The cohesive way it keeps coming back to threads we'd long thought tied off, only to discover the knot is only an accent in the larger overall tapestry, is a feat I haven't seen matched in another series to this degree.

However, in the vein of Harry Dresden himself, I believe myself not clever enough to make the call about the objective quality of this book. Taking place over the eponymous twelve months, a far cry from the usual few days Harry has to deal with his crises, it could be viewed as disjointed; many smaller stories rather than a single whole. People could say that one of its major messages gets repetitive, the same thing being spouted over and over in different ways by different characters across the story. There are probably other concerns smarter, more critical readers will point out.

But I say anyway that this book is a MASTERPIECE. Recent times have been rough for me, personally, so I've been looking forward to the new release from my favorite series as a means of temporary escape from the real world. Imagine my surprise when, despite being as immersed as ever in the plot and world, the characters started talking directly to me. I found my own issues dragged out and exposed by the wisdom, kindness, and support Harry gets from his friends and allies. I've never lived through a supernatural warzone only to pick up the pieces of the ruins of a major metropolitan area, but I regularly pause to blink back tears as Ebenezar tried to excuse the inexcusable, as Michael reminded me that I am not my flaws, and as Harry himself came to understand himself in ways that I've been struggling to find the words to describe.

Whether or not critics find Twelve Months a piece of Literature or not, it has spoken to the very core of me and given me perspective into the human condition as it relates to me, and can we really ask anything more of art? ...more "
