This book is way more emotionally intense than I was expecting!

Never mind. Sherlock is okay. I was worried for a minute there…

No no no not Sherlock! Romance books can’t have pet deaths, much less pet murders! That is NOT okay!

Pride and Prejudice is incredible! I know the protagonist is supposed to be likeable, but I can judge her for not enjoying it.

Seriously, we were just thrown into all this and none of the existing dynamics were explained. I’m so confused.

I still don’t even really know how Taylor and Austen are friends. Is it because she’s an event planner for his parents’ hotel? Why is he so protective of her?

My boyfriend agrees that the narrator’s British accent is “not great”. It’s rather unfortunate given how much she ends up using it.

I don’t understand what’s going on. It seems like Chuck Bigley is supposed to be liked Mr. Bingley in Pride and Prejudice, but Jane Austen exists as an author in this universe. Isn’t that a little on the nose?

This narrator is fine when she speaks in her normal voice, but she keeps putting on these dreadful accents and making anyone the author interviews sound ridiculous. It’s making it hard to take anyone seriously. She really is horrendous!

Somehow, despite his earlier misogyny, I think the author would still hate Donald Trump as president based on his current rants about Western civilization. That, at least, is a relief.

This description of being a wizard sounds a lot like autism in our society. Not gonna lie, being a wizard sounds way cooler.

I’m getting “Kids These Days” vibes from the way the author is writing. I agree that lots of capitalism is messed up, but he’s talking as if the downfall of society is about to occur due to technology. He wrote this in the ‘80s and I know for a fact that we’re fine and Eastern society has not overtaken Western society. I want facts, not opinions.

I don’t know what to make of what I just read. Feminists (or Eeyore Amazons) are using Hyper-masculinity to make things confusing and suppress women? What? So what if a woman wants to keep her own last name. Yes, it came from her father, but it’s the name she was born with. Why can’t we have gender neutral terms? I thought I’d be learning about Taoism, not reading rants about the author’s beliefs.

As someone who tends to faint, I have no idea how they can’t tell she’s faking it. She’s basically just lying there with her eyes closed.

All staff serving the family need to be “attractive in appearance”? That’s messed up!

Their apartment is almost $500 a month? That sounds like a steal! Now I understand how they’re surviving on a wage of $15 per hour.

I know this book is kind of old now, but is $12 an hour supposed to be a good wage? The States is crazy!

This is giving me chills. I wasn’t expecting so much psychological horror from this novel. Everyone is absolutely losing it.

Seven hour detention cannot be normal, although I suppose blood quills are not either.

This book is too engaging. I should be sleeping!

I really like it when I listen to two books with overlapping subject matter in quick succession. Quackery: A History of the Worst Ways to Cure Everything, written by Lydia Kang, also covered the bizarre “cure” for “hysteria”. I get to listen and say “I knew that!” which is incredibly satisfying.

Does the book really have to mention Cole’s dragon heart every other paragraph? I get it. He can turn into a dragon and he has two hearts. I don’t need to be reminded continually.

I knew the twist right away, right from when she arrived in the castle.

I just looked up the laws and prices. She is allowed to buy up to 250 kg of ammo, which is insane and she’s likely spending about $1000 on it as a conservative estimate. Not including the gun she’s also about to buy. Crazy! She must have gotten a lot of money from the agency after her kidnapping or something.

I know Sydney is probably paranoid from her past ordeal, but fifty boxes of ammo sounds like a ton. Doesn’t that raise any red flags for the store? Just how many bullets is that?

I am genuinely enjoying this book right now, but the look on my face would suggest otherwise. The thought of drinking blood makes me want to vomit. I feel like that must have spread so much disease!

It’s kind of anachronistic that I like medical history books so much while being so insanely squeamish. I must admit that this chapter on bloodletting is making me incredibly uncomfortable. It’s a good thing I’m lying down!

My thoughts so far are that the book isn’t poorly written, but it’s failing to grab me. I feel like I’m not a part of the story, but am just witnessing it. For example, when we’re told Sydney is holding off a panic attack, it’s simply stated. I have panic attacks and I feel like my ideal book would draw me in and make me feel as if I was there with Sydney, struggling to get the words out, bathed in fear.
