I don’t think footnotes should be ready in their entirety at the end of an audiobook. Perhaps they should have been read at the end of each chapter (or even each page, like they are in the book itself) so they would be more applicable to their subject matter? Having them presented all at once at the very end of the book seems strange.

As a Canadian, I’m kind of put off by how the author is portraying Canadians. The ones she’s portraying are from B.C. and no one I have met from B.C. talks like that. They feel more like caricatures for comedic effect than real people.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder represent!

Chapter seven had absolutely lovely trans representation that I didn’t expect to see in a historical fiction novel. Despite the hate crime, it was absolutely heartwarming to see how Jackaby sees the world and allows people to choose who they are of their own accord.

This grown woman is embarrassed to use her inhaler, a medical device, in front of a handsome man? Is she stupid? That’s one of the dumbest things to be self conscious about that I can think of. Asthma is so common!

Gah I hate Connor so much! Stop treating her like a child and invalidating her opinions! Just say you’re genuinely not interested and she’ll go away.

It’s lovely to hear Iwan from The Seven Year Slip mentioned! I wonder if all of Ashley Poston’s novels take place in the same world.

This book has an incredibly messed up view of suicide and the morality of taking over someone’s body. People do not generally commit suicide for attention and it hasn’t mentioned the mental health aspect of it at all. It simply seems like a plot point that may allow the alien to get a human body. It’s all giving me the ick. I don’t like this.

I’m not sure if I’m supposed to like Charlie or Ray, but I can’t force myself to like any man who calls a woman a f*ck-puppet. Is that supposed to be humour or just straight up misogyny?

Also, he should stop adopting pets if he’s just going to kill them all. It’s cruel.

I don’t know where I actually am because the audiobook won’t tell me, but every single character is a caricature and every single situation is over the top. It’s also somewhat racist. Was this okay in 2005?

It’s kind of concerning to me that the protagonist keeps crying. I’m not into this kind of stuff, but it doesn’t seem normal or healthy.

I can’t get over the name “Pooter”. It’s such a terrible name for a cat that I honestly don’t know if I can respect Samantha as a protagonist.

I’m listening to the audiobook, so I don’t know which page I’m actually on, but I’m somewhere in Chapter 18. This book is making me seriously uncomfortable. Did the author seriously introduce a literal rapist to allow Reed to save Ella and make himself look better in comparison?! Considering how often they’ve been referred to as siblings and how much of a jerk he is, it’s giving me the ick.

I like Bradbury’s spirit. He’s basically telling people “If you don’t like my books and want to change them, you’re free to write your own.” He has solid boundaries and I respect that!

I knew Chief Beatty was well read! It’s so satisfying to have my suspicions confirmed.

I obviously haven’t watched enough teen dramas, because this is the first reference I’ve actually gotten. Grey’s Anatomy FTW!

Vivi strikes me as almost a manic pixie dream girl type. She’s positively effervescent, but then throws out a completely accurate description of depression that just hits you in the gut. Normally, I’m not a fan of insta-love, but in her case it seems more like infatuation or a manic episode. I’m really enjoying When We Collided so far. I’m getting Looking For Alaska vibes, but with more raw emotion.

As much as I’m enjoying this book, it could use a good proofread.

I was so bored. Everything was progressing so slowly. Now my heart is being torn into pieces and I can’t help but feel everything all at once. I’m lost for words.

Oh you’re so much better than the First Nations people that you’ll murder them in cold blood and eat them, but you’ll still accept help from a tribe when offered? The Donner Party are very hard to pity at times…

I like the way the author occasionally goes off on tangents. I’m guessing on the percentage, but right now he’s describing other things happening at the time to basically illustrate that it’s not as long ago as you think. Earlier he was talking about other desperate situations that drove people to cannibalism. He provides nice context.

I’m on Chapter 4 of the audiobook. The narrator is awful. He completely lacks inflection and sounds like a robot. His voice is incredibly monotone and is devoid of personality. This may be a long book.

I really do enjoy Gabrielle Zevin writing, but I’m starting to dread any passages with Sadie and Sam. I’m genuinely enjoying the Pioneers chapter because they’re technically not in it, despite the fact the Emily is very obviously based on Sadie.

Marx is a much better person than Sadie and Sam. Despite the shift to second person, I infinitely prefer his perspective!

How do they not know what s’mores are? I’m so confused!

I just want to say how incredibly shocked I am at this twist, yet I feel like an idiot for not seeing it coming. Holy crap! My mind is blown!

“Maybe we are all-the-sudden twins.” There it is again!

Another typo! An E is missing in Claire. Did anyone proofread this book?

“I don’t know why, but somehow, all the sudden, it seems like I could get away in the Ironton County Mobile Library on Wheels.” The same grammatical error again!
