It feels like Todd wrote larger chunks of. this one. Todd and Anne's styles are a bit different and it shows at times. Readers not familiar with the Pern series may have trouble following the story. There is very little background provided in the story itself, and those unfamiliar with the dragon rider naming. conventions may have difficulty keeping characters straight.

Guiltyy pleasure time again. No apologies.

Slater is one of my guilty pleasures.

Michener does his homework. His historical references are sound and are carefully woven into the story. That being said, I also have to say that it sometimes makes portions of the book tedious.
