I'm so torn because on the one hand, I can't stop reading, I want to know what happens with these beans. But on the other hand, I'm not loving the grumpy x sunshine dynamic and I can't believe not a single person knows she's pregnant. This is so unbelievable. At least one of the nosey old ladies (affectionate) would have figured it out. It's such a weird plot device that isn't even being used all that well...

I feel like everyone is trying to hard ro justify Brooks' behavior and like. I get it. I wish we got his POV because it seems like his side of the story is super interesting and I want know more

But also. Just feel like "cool motive, still an asshole"

Every one of Martha Waters' books reminds me of another classic and this one feels very Jane Eyre. This Jane reminds me of Jane Eyre in the way she thinks and narrates and I know it's eventually also going to get Northanger Abbey vibes and I'm just so so in love 😍

I will say, I'm over the "the dad is still in love with his first wife and mentions it all the time but it's okay because we don't like the stepmother anyway" trope

Like, no, it doesn't absolve the stepmother of her actions but also, I can't imagine marrying someone and knowing I'll never measure up to his dead wife and I'm definitely being compared to her at all times...💔

Don't get me wrong, I love Julia and Gregory, they'd adorable and their dialogue sparklea, but also...Julia is giving *major* "not like other girls" vibes, especially in the way Gregory sees her, like it somehow makes her more special that she's different from all those *other* women and I'm over it 🙄
