Goddamn, I forgot just how well this author portrays narcissists. Like real narcissists. She nails it with extreme accuracy. Which means that my experience listening to her good writing is feeling my gut wrenching.

This book is wrecking me in ALL the best ways possible!!

Goddamn! Had to pause. Didn’t see this coming.

Her last book - the abominable pregnancy book - was trash. Let’s see if she recovers in this one. Her books before were all good, so here’s hoping.

Remarkably insightful and great craft. But good lawd, literary tomes need to be propulsive, too.

I am struggling not to DNF this one. It’s so bad. So flat and full of nonsense. The racial dynamic is unappealing and showcasing racism. The storyline and protagonists are static and all Lisa’s mojo is missing here. Worst of all, for the first time, the narrator is doing a horrible job. She was great for the past three books, but she’s totally off her game here. This should have stayed on the desk.

Okay, 3 books in, and Kleypas definitely has a narcissist parent and has thus encountered others.

Whew, apparently I like being triggered by this author. This mother 😐

Would I be totally wrong in thinking Kleypas for sure dealt with multiple narcissists before writing this book?

Oh lawd, Haven doing the same thing. Allowing the same thing. It’s realistic. But very hard to take.

There are a couple places where Kleypas sounds clinical, but mostly she gets the domestic violence spot on. Content warning: triggering to listen to.

I just don’t get the complete personality switch Haven undergoes when she wants to fight her brother on every little thing, which is a 180 from her interactions with her husband, Nick.

How long is this triggering domestic violence going to last? This is a lot.

Really good. But a little too much angst for where I am right now.

Oh, the drama. I eh know I I able.

The female narrator is annoying and the female producer is annoying. Jeez.

Lucy Rivers is an awful narrator.

I am not liking all this heavy religiousity and clannishness. At all. I get the analogy. But it’s didactic and emotionally heavy and disturbing. I get what it’s reflecting about society. Yet, this is too much.

This is ridiculous. I just want to knock some sense into Lena.

Huh…a woman doing all this for a man. I dunno.

This book is so dumb. The heroine is absurdly clumsy and bordering on TSTL and she’s making the most ridiculous leaps on non-logic. Why do women writers think we want ridiculous protagonists?

KA does some weird stuff. A waterbed? Ma’am, is it 1990?

More than the romance, the insight into and blow up of dysfunctional parental relationships is what’s working for me in this book. Yes.

I hate this obligation to insert unnecessary conflict in the 3rd act that is this trite Western model. And this book is supposed to be no/low angst.

Come on. Let’s not suddenly Mary Sue this shit.

I haaaaate unnecessary drama.

I’m enjoying this, but I have to give a disclaimer. I’m in academia and, in reality, this situation is utterly reprehensible. This romance should not happen. And yet these power dynamics happen way too often in the toxic, dysfunctional cesspit that is academia. It is always disgusting when it does. Ph.D. candidates deal with licentious, obnoxious, power-tripping professors IRL. I am reading this as pure fantasy.
