Not sure if I want to finish this book because I feel like I am having a largely biographical conversation with Alan Greenspan, and I'm not sure if that's a conversation I want to have, particularly not with him.

"Western economists generally considered input-output matrices to be of limited use because they failed to capture the dynamism of an economy—in the real world, the relationships between inputs and outputs almost invariably shift faster than they can be estimated."

I only just realized this hymn to late capitalism was published in 2007 before the global crisis, of which Alan Greenspan was a participating architect and (frankly) villain. It feels abysmally incongruous to be reading a panegyric to capitalism, which is revealed to be, in fact, a eulogy.

"Thus I beg you to send me some more information about this very curious and important matter; I zealously await your response, etc."
From now on, I shall use these phrases industriously. How excellent.

Hate to disparage, but Leibniz is trying to reconcile causal determinism and free will (necessity and contingency) with the most unconvincing philosophical defense that I have ever had the misfortune of reading. Goodness me! There was I thinking his pursuit of a universal language outlandish.

Reading abundantly, in good books, is indispensable. It is only in good writing that you will find how words are best used, what shades of meaning they can be made to carry, and by what devices (or lack of them) the reader is kept going smoothly or bogged down in confusion.

"The price of learning to use words is the development of an acute self-consciousness. Nor is it enough to pay attention to words only when you face the task of writing—that is like playing the violin only on the night of the concert. You must attend to words when you read, when you speak, when others speak. Words must become ever present in your waking life, an incessant concern..."

Spoiler alert: there is no logic. Not now, at least.

My professor told me my essay writing was acceptable but, effectively, 'non-analytic'. (The reason I left the humanities is coming back to me at once. . ) The Great Chain of Being.

I'l leave my document here in case anyone wants to give me feedback on how to make my writing more analytic. Or anything else.

In a mood today, obviously. Everything irritates me.
