Somehow, even though this feels like reading a sociological study of some foreign age or country--totally different from my life experience, I am still reading it! So I suppose it must be pretty well written. As a former historian I find it somewhat fascinating to see this divergent perspective portrayed as the picture of a generation, though there are glossed over glimpses of other (more common) paths.

I think I figured it out--these are hipsters and their parents--since I'm not one I just don't get it.

These boomer parents are not my boomer parents--if we ran out of lunch money on our account in grade school and didn't get the message home we didn't eat, not because there wasn't money--it was our responsibility--even as a second grader.

Rarely has a book made me more angry quicker--I should read more non-fiction. Though this book is like no reality I know.

Too much angst for me--I just want to shout "the world is ending, and just because you are hiding in a high school doesn't mean you have to stay in a high school mindset!" Also I find the relationship between the twins creepy, in a flowers in the attic and not zombie way.

I can relate to this heroine, chasing after a cat in her pjs!

I'd forgotten how tediously pointless this war was. Nothing new here so far, though I will say that it does make the confusing war a little clearer. I wish the author would play up the WTF element of the war.

I'd just like to say that some early reader books have magic, and last for 100's of circs, while some have no magic and die after 10-20 circs.

I found the citations, I feel better about this book. I like the actual story parts, I relate to the little girl's persecution complex. The book really needs to come with a CD to listen with--I have Kingston Trio and Bob Dylan. Where have all the flowers gone is mentioned in the book.

This is an interesting concept for a book, but I'm not sure of the audience. So far it is spotty as to what a kid would understand on his or her own without a teacher explaining. What is communism, what's the deal with Vietnam? And because this book has so many artifacts (without citations or explanations) it is sort of like starting a fantasy book in the middle where you don't know the rules or the players.

I'm loving this book. It sort of reminds me of the Doll in the Garden, by M.D. Hahn. The tone is different, I love the voice so far.

I really enjoy Delphine's voice, the older sister bit really rings true. Something about the book seems familiar, though the setting is entirely different from any I've read.

My only question is: super genuis child doesn't realize that escapeing and running directly to her family=really easy to catch?

I think I like the cover of the version I have, but the purple one might better reflect the book.
