"Radio waves reflecting from the ground have lower losses when the polarization of the wave is parallel to the ground. That is, when the waves are horizontally polarized. Because the antenna’s radiation pattern is made up of the reflected waves combining with the direct waves that are not reflected, lower reflection loss results in stronger maximum signal strength"

"Testing of each level of assembly was expensive, but the cost of early testing paled in comparison to the epsense of tearing apart a unit, reworking and retesting it, as well as the consequent costs in schedule delays or loss of needed capabilities in orbit."

Well... this book should be MANDATORY reading for any space systems engineer. Piece parts evolution always gets short shrift and shouldn't!

This isn't exactly a page turner. What it does provide is great context before and after the crisis itself.

I love primary sources. Reading from a primary source from the time of Alfred the Great is a joy. A blink of time has passed since those days yet their world is as opaque to us as can be but for the light of Asser's pen
