I read a lot of English public school melodrama as a child, and went to a relatively formal (prefects, uniform, calling people by surname) sort of high school, so the atmosphere resonates with me. Ishiguro writes with a style that leads you through the recollections, chapter by chapter, in a style that is both languid and purposeful, and highly compelling. And very, very creepy.
