So I'm very much enjoying this EXCEPT you know how readers get super frustrated with characters just not communicating? That's not something that bothers me if the barriers to communication feel authentic. But I am SO FRUSTRATED rn! There have been so many opportunities to just say "I thought you were dead. They thought it was my fault. I couldn't go back and also you were dead and I was devastated." Crickets!!

Who was I to question whether Vonda MacIntyre could squeeze polyamory into a canon Star Trek novel? OH ME OF LITTLE FAITH. Right here in ch 2, Capt James T Kirk confesses to Bones that not only could he have loved all nine members of this OC's polycule, but that turning them down was "the biggest mistake I ever made in my life." Oh Vonda, never change. Will keep you posted on neopronouns as the novel progresses.

So the jury is still out a little bit on this one because if nitpicky things but especially that the whole book has been referencing real life authors except maybe she just invented Elena Masterson, the author I really really need to read? I feel like when I read Hild and the author had them singing "do your ears hang low" in medieval times and had just stick it in anachronistically?

What is this. Is this man triplets? Is he three men? Because otherwise I cannot fathom how I won't hate it.

I want to DNF *and* I want to know what happens. Tempted to just get spoilers and stop.

Argh I'm so ANNOYED by these characters! Like, all of them. Kadou is the ultimate woobie, Evemer is an Anne Rice-style service sub, the power imbalances are squicky, the gaze feels objectifying... it's like bad fic you read for a fandom you're into because you bring the character development basics/headcanon/emotional investment along with you so the author doesn't have to.

Permanently reading and re-reading as an audiobook.

This has sat in my currently-reading shelf since 2019 bc I'm still rereading it over and over. Just listening to the audiobook on and off all the time. Obvs it's incredible, it's bell hooks on education, and the audiobook is perfect for me bc it slows down my reading and gives me space for processing and reflection. Highly recommended doing this - just keep it constantly in rotation.

Almost done but I'm really struggling with the endless, unrelenting fatphobia and shaming/humiliation. I'm going to finish it to find out what happens (I have ZERO idea how this is going to get to a satisfying HEA and I'm already in in the epilogue) but I think if I'd known how heavily this relies on fat pain, I probably wouldn't have started.

Input needed! Just started the audio of this and it's... awful and so far icky about fandom. But I'm only just past his first POV chapter. Fandom folks/fic readers who have read this: yay or nay? Will it continue to be this terrible or do I need to give it another try?

ungh, I'm not sure whether to stick with this or DNF it. I'm ~70pp in and so far it's very pew-pew-pew action but I'm having a super hard time connecting to the characters. I like the queers! I like the animal familiars (I think)! But it's a little... tedious and messy so far?

How it is possible that I have encountered TWO youth books with polyamorous queer parents in ONE week? Where there were ZERO before? 2019!

I wasn't in the right mood for SORCERER TO THE CROWN when I first tried it, so I DNF'ed. But so many adored it that I decided to give this companion novel a try, and I am 100% loving it so far... so much so that I downloaded the audiobook of Sorceror last night so that I can give it another go! I'm sure it's going to work for me this time.

I was just describing this book to my coworker, who then said, thoughtfully: "so... it's basically a Disney Channel Original Movie? But gayer." and I was like, yes, accurate.

I am loving this so far! BUT. Kid. Congresswoman Maxine Waters did not kick ass through 37 years of public service and counting to be called "Maxine" by a 21yo.

I don't think this was supposed to be a meaningful moment of characterization? But it put me on my back foot something fierce.
