im not really moved by the world building but i’m enjoying how much of this is over-the-top character studies. good fun.

This is the perfect book to listen to while doing something else ❤️

listening to a well-read audiobook of a lavishly overwritten and unbelievably trope-y historical novel while playing balatro is honestly a great way to spend an evening

picked this up on a whim bc it was recently reprinted and this book is wild so far. needle-sharp. the view into 1940s black bostonian culture (and bostonian culture generally) is so fascinating as someone who lives here but doesn't have family roots in the area.

this book had me looking up emily tesh's wikipedia page to see if she's a teacher as her day job...i can smell one of us from a mile away

Enjoying this but why does the narrator only ever say “gay woman”. I don’t know if the word lesbian has been in this book once??? obviously there’s nothing incorrect about “gay woman” but it feels awkward and unrealistic to never say lesbian. feels weirdly as if the author has not ever talked to lesbians about lesbianism.

trying to like this so far but where was the editor...35 pages in and Trayvon Martin's name has been misspelled and a latino character said a slur in spanish but like, in a totally grammatically wrong way??? im just confused here idk

ok this book has some flaws (the middle was extremely confusing and reliant on a LOT of fantastical handwaving, and there’s like, Baru Cormorant 3 levels of explicit moralizing that i think would have been more effective without being on the page constantly) BUT the first and 3rd acts have had me on the edge of my fuckin seat!!!!! unputdownable!!!!
