Loved this book! Almost gave it a 5. It took me a chapter or two to get into it: Just felt too light-hearted for a WWII book. But the characters grow...and they grew on me, too. Highly recommend.

I am loving this book. A less accessible book about the presence and importance of homing pigeons was set in WW1. This one, in WW2, is a very easy read, also richly imagined and gripping. Of the novels on homing pigeons used in recent wars, this is my first choice.

I sincerely meant to skim this, but it's compelling reading. I so very much appreciate especially the review of cognitive behavioral therapy--a powerful way to counter our unhealthy pursuit of "stinkin' thinkin'."

Well THIS is a wake-up call! LIstening to this very informative book and thinking about what can be done--micro and macro-level changes needed. 9-12-20: This is a tough listen. I absolutely think that I have to change my shopping strategies, but that won't solve this problem for the world.

I'd never have picked this book up, but it came recommended by my son. It's exceptionally well researched and very informative. Anyone who has suffered from depression, anxiety, OCD will find the information helpful. One does not need to be planning to use hallucinogens to find the history of their use interesting and mind-expanding.

I want to know how Hilary Mantel does it--create and maintain a persona in such a subtle way, expressing his thoughts and all that's going on around him too. She's brilliant. Within the first page of this book I was back in the story.

I know he's going to die, but I still don't see it coming. There are, though, dark clouds on the horizon....

This is a very readable memoir of a trip west from Wisconsin to California. The author recounts traveling with a small wagon train, leaving women and children behind as he and another young man scouted the way across Death Valley to Los Angeles, then back to get the others and back across again. The details are interesting, the situations harrowing and believable. I just visited Death Valley and can picture it all!

I'm recording this for Librivox. It just came into the public domain and looks interesting to me. Also, the author is a woman, so I think my female voice may be a good match for this.

I was slow to warm up to this book, but now, half-way through, I think it's a gem. The author opens his eyes wide to see, understand, and appreciate the women in his world. I especially love the chapter about his wife's great-great-grandmother. Amazing.

Well, I expected a weighty, somber tome, but this is utterly light and charming--a little bit of Bertie Wooster meets Larry David! lol "Curb Your Enthusiasm" meets "Shirley Temple in Gorky Park!"

I love the people who love this book, so I started it and immediately worried it wouldn't be my cup of tea. I didn't care for the voice of Lily. But I persisted, and now I'm loving it. Creative, amusing, sad but not overwhelming: well done Steven Rowley! Probably finish tomorrow.
