So far, I love this book. The main argument—that policies and practices oppressing black people precede the racist ideas generated to justify those practices—is powerful, upending my “commonsense” assumption that racist hate and ignorance came first. Moreover, the author’s categories of segregationist, assimilationist, and anti-racist help to distinguish racist thought in history and in our contemporary world.

I’m so very depressed...

I love this. Not least because it’s so practical and also so personally challenging. Sometimes I can get to feeling so enlightened, so it’s really good when that’s upended.

It’s good—a kind of bible for providing care to a person with dementia. I was reading it cover to cover like a normal book, but now I’m using it as more of a reference book—looking up stuff in the index when I need it. I recommend this for anyone who loves someone with dementia!

This book challenges me to work to heal myself like no damn "inspirational quote" ever did or could. Still not sure how to go about it, but I'm more determined to try.

I like graphic novels, but I suck at reading them. I'm so text-oriented that I find myself leaping from text bubble to text bubble and not taking the time to really see the images. For this book, that's a terrible shame, because it's beautifully drawn. I need to slow down and look let myself linger over every page.

Oh my gosh, this book is so horrific. I mean, it's good, but the story is grueling—layers of human evil and oppression. I wonder how much has really changed?
