In still in the preface and all the frustrations I had the last time I read a Bell Hooks book are returning 🫩 vague statements that mean nothing and writing that is so overly sentimental that I wonder if it’s supposed to stir me emotionally rather make sense to me.

is this my sign to DNF?

“An ordinary wife would have counted herself lucky to find a husband with Peleus’ mildness, his smile-lined face. But for the sea-nymph Thetis nothing could ever eclipse the stain of his dirty, mortal mediocrity.”

This is a wild statement. “Mildness”? “Lucky”?

have to disagree here. At some point, so many identifiers becomes unwieldy and chronically online. less examples of the many “unique engagements with asexuality across social contexts” and more evidence of how the presumption is (hetero)allosexuality such that every single different experience must be identified and catalogued. I also can’t get behind allo words that lump in straights and gays/lesbians alike

Disturbing opening… “simple” women, teenage marriage.

I was expecting a lot of prose. Instead so much of the story is essay-like with references and links even.

The girls in this book are consistently very assertive and perceptive. It’s beyond their years for the average child, unless they are parroting what they hear adults say. Such a critical child of the world would be an exception rather than so common at this age, especially if their families and schools are brainwashing them with sexist nonsense.

This book gets worse with each sentence. You can tell the author is a hotep, most if not all characters are one dimensional, lots of sexism, no world building, and there is no science to this sci-fi. Wdym a perfect circle does not exist mathematically ???

the author cannot decide if this is a catastrophe or a utopia. There is no unity, expertise, management or leadership, but somehow also no homelessness or public littering, but also no sense of clock time, but also people can walk at night without fearing for their lives, but also danger because it's apparently lawless in some places. Huh? A ridiculous and inconsistent thought experiment.

There’s so many plot holes already. The opening chapter is overly dramatic and so impossible that it’s lazy
