Nearly halfway through reading this, I can’t help but hate Yoseb and his fragile masculinity which makes everyone’s life more difficult. But what I truly admire is how the author wrote the strong bond between Sunja and Kyunghee. They find ways to survive everyday and provide for the family together.

"He had taught her to respect herself, and she had not. She had betrayed her mother and father, who had done nothing but work hard and take care of her like a jewel."

Oh this book hurts.
