"'...You and I are the kind of people other people are always trying to fit into their schemes. So suppose we didn't play along, then what?'

'Maybe I am peculiar, that I only know these strange ways of doing something. Instead of sticking to the ordinary way and doing something false.'"

"And although not convinced by her, I wasn't utterly horrified for the unborn either. To be completely consistent in that kind of economy of souls you would have to have great uneasiness and remorse that wombs should ever be unoccupied; likewise, that hospitals, prisons, and mandhouses and graves should ever be full. That wide a spread is too much."

Shrieking at the email reveal. And how the chapter ends without us getting Thomas' reaction! This is how you build tension, how you write a novel. Thinking: Thomas sees himself often as happily without free will - he's a star in orbit, following his course (but convinced, desperately convinced, that he IS orbiting, not adrift never to return...) vs. how Dimi saw himself as unhappily taken by river currents.

ohhh Grace. I can't believe you did that. I understand why you did that! This book, in the best way, feels almost Victorian for all it's set in modern day - and Biblical without a bit of it being preachy. You have to go slow, you have to savor.

What a vibrant, gasping depiction of sudden love - love at first sight is so often done so poorly, but that's how you write it so it matters. Also: "Do you think you lose your faith, because your faith does not want you? That would be easy! My life would have been a happier one!" I love all the ! in his speech and how he's giddy as he says it - to a mysterious dead woman in an old photo who clambers out of the frame!
