New fun fact: The discovery of nitrogen sequestration from the air took the human population from 1.6 billion to 7 billion over the course of a century because it gave us unlimited fertilizer??!!!! That's making me feel some typa way about natural population control........

I have a beautiful hardcover copy in Spanish that I bought in Colombia in 2018, and have finally submitted to the sad truth that the fluency I needed was above my pay grade. I now have a filmsy paperback copy that's in English and I promise to work my way up to reading that beautiful hardcover. Maybe with the Spanish audio book in between

"In spite of the tattoos and pierced nose and eyebrows she was...well...attractive. It was inexplicable." Allow me to explain then: all those things add to someone being very hot and sexy. That's all!

"... when the Pathet soldiers fire, you do not think about your family, just yourself only. On the other side of the river you cannot say to your wife, I love you more than my life. She saw! You cannot say that anymore. And when you try to restick this thing together it is like putting glue on broken glass. "

This book has me speechless, this quote is all I have to share

Marking progress because I have better books to prioritize right now and this one is overdue at the lib, was a whimsical rendition of a fictitious flawed childhood

The Hmong people have a phrase, "to speak of all kinds of things." Here's an example of that:

"My village is where I was born and where my father was born and died and buried and where my father's father died and was buried, but my father's father was born in China and to tell you about that would take all night."

Already obsessed with this book and how it shows cultures "colliding" and how the Hmong see the world

"If my chest were a bit more voluminous, travelers would start to feel concerned about the cleft in the terrain stretching out ahead of them. As it is though [...] any visitors to the area would probably only feel disappointment at the lack of adventure on offer."

This made me giggle

I really enjoyed this style of writing, I can feel all the emotion that Alice experiences, while also being able to sympathize with the other characters. Here is an amazing sample of Alice getting the bad news, "The sound of her name penetrated her every cell and seemed to scatter her molecules beyond the boundaries of her own skin. She watched herself from the far corner of the room." Talk about going in-depth...
