Also I didn’t know the history of how BPA in baby bottles got banned in 2012 and phthalates in kids toys. There’s still much progress to be made against extremely wealthy and powerful people and companies but it was so inspiring hearing the story and seeing how brave she was!

The way I’ve never heard of the ACC but they have their hands so deep in consumer safety laws that they’re in court defending chemicals that have been proven dozens of times to hurt us. The chem industry paying for studies to be skewed to show no harm even if it keeps us sick and getting sicker. Thank goodness for the good scientists & lobbyists that have been fighting for change for years even while threatened

This book is so fascinating and I love how comprehensive it has made a pretty complex subject. The antibiotics for babies being linked to an increase of so many problems was really eye opening. It also has me much more motivated to try to avoid antibiotics in meats better and to make sure everyone in the family is on a probiotic!! Love learning

“By eroding our resilience, social media has made us less able to connect with people who have different political views than ourselves. But even worse, we’ve become to fragile that even reading something that feels like a critique of our lifestyles or political parties, makes us show down. When this happens, the chemical industry wins.”
Already learning stuff I didn’t know about like vinyl vs rubber, ABS etc

“Social media is making things way worse. The fact that anyone can be an “expert” is further muddying the science, making it even harder for consumers to tell what’s safe. And when we’re confused and overwhelmed, we’re less compelled to push elected officials for better laws.”

The way drs didn’t understand periods and falsely concluded that a period wreaks so much havoc on a woman’s body that it’s best she simply “stay pregnant” to avoid it. How doctors directed all girls to get married at the onset of puberty so they could get and continue getting pregnant and avoid their period, which in turn meant so many girls and their babies died in childbirth…I’m speechless

Ehh. It should have been titled to include pregnancy, I was expecting a birth guide, not an exhaustive guide on her personal pregnancies. She is basically only talking about her experience so her being a doula is pretty moot and it’s a lot of recipes/obvious tips (like walk a lot!! don’t eat sugar!!!) Super beginner info and the random section men for pregnant men was cringe. Pls read something else like Ina May

Lots of interesting info. The recent research on women’s contractions SENT ME. Women w/ weaker contractions who typically are escalated to a cesarean tend to have more acid in their uterine blood (that helps to cause contractions). When given bicarbonate of soda almost 20% more women were able to give birth vaginally. Ofc she was told her research is not a high enough priority and would not receive funding. Lovely

Okay the fact that in the introduction he’s talking about his experience reading Ann Fessler’s The Girls Who Went Away (one of my all-time favorite most eye-opening books) and that it helped inspire this book?? Alongside some of his family members going through similar atrocities?? SOLD

The beginning felt basic, but the sections on public transit and roads being male focused was fascinating and the chapter on public toilet closures and shortages is even more frustratingly so

Observing these on a small scale is much more comprehensible to me.
“Store my meat? I store my meat in the belly of my brother.”
“Wealth is having enough to share.”
“The prosperity of the community grows from the flow of relationships, not from the accumulation of goods.”
“Gifts are not meant to be hoarded and thus made scarce for others - but given away - which generates sufficiency for all.”

Wasn’t drawn in right away but all of the small area variation commentary and then going into corruption has me reeling. The Waldorf mom was such a stark and alarming example to me of how blind we become in our biases and how we will twist our minds and experiences to avoid confronting the possibility of our being wrong. I’ll be thinking about that for a while and how to avoid that contradictory way of thinking.

Definitely not what I was expecting and I’m disappointed! I thought it would be more historical and less anecdote after anecdote. The audiobook’s reader is awful and the author’s tone is too sarcastic/trying to be funny. We’ll see if I finish it. 🙃
