What launched me into this novel was not the plot per se but the gripping chronology. Although the different generations that this book follows are introduced in order, the story develops in a spiral. This line of Desiree telling her daughter Jude the story of Stella perfectly demonstrates this mesmerizing storytelling style:

Freud's ultimate book presents the claim that not only was the Biblical Moses an Egyptian, but that he brought the cult of Akhenaten to the Jews with the Exodus. Sigmund Freud amply clarifies on the very speculative nature of this whole treatise. I was surprised by how well-sourced it was in contemporary Egyptology. Struggling whether to assess this academically or just enjoy as one might a Dan Brown novel.

What the hell am I reading? It seems as if reading this book as an introduction to Sade was a bad idea. Faut-il brûler Sade?
