A small smile steals across my lips as I glance between her and Orion.

“That’s insane! The whips weren’t going to kill me. But you, you could have died! Why would you risk your life like that?”

He blinks, looking stunned.

Down on the sand, Isera spreads her arms wide with dramatic flair and gives the audience a theatrical bow. Then she flashes Orion a wicked grin and blows him a kiss.
The crowd completely erupts.

No one will come near Draven with a whip ever again. I will burn down hell itself before I ever let that happen. He is mine.

“What?” he asks, glancing from face to face. When no one states the obvious, he lifts a hand and rubs the back of his neck in a surprisingly self-conscious move. “I’ve already told you. Everything burns if the fire is hot enough.”

I soak up the terror in his eyes like a fucking psycho as he drops the key into my waiting palm. But it just feels so good. This power. This absolute power I have over him right now. It’s intoxicating.

They wanted a show.
I’ll give them a show.

Draven deserves this. He deserves everything. Friends. Family. Love. Freedom. Good food and lazy days and happiness.

“You tried. I know you.” A small smile ghosts across Draven’s lips for a moment. “I watched you. You spent the first forty-two years trying to figure out why I was acting the way I was before you gave up. Forty-two years, Galen.”

“Because I have emotion magic too.”

The Unseelie King said that Draven trusts no one.
But he has trusted me with everything.
His life.
His body.
His freedom.
His heart.
All my life, no one has ever trusted me with anything. But he does.

But he doesn’t look angry.
He looks intrigued.

Instead, he is treating me like he always has. As if I’m strong and powerful.

“So fight with everything you have to stay here with me, because I would hate to have to add Destroyer of the Afterlife to the already ridiculously long list of titles people have given me.”

“There is nothing I wouldn’t do for you. I would crawl and grovel. I would slaughter entire nations.”

I will take on the pain, I will take on the debt, I will take on whatever fate requires of me. Next time, I will be the one protecting him.

Draven is secretly working with both the human rebellion and the fae resistance. And has been for years. Decades.

I knew it!!

Betraying him tonight is going to shatter what’s left of my heart.

“I did it solely because I wanted to. Because I wanted you.”

And deep inside that broken heart of mine, I know that he doesn’t deserve this. He doesn’t deserve to be left behind to take the blame for our crimes. He doesn’t deserve to be betrayed like this. Especially not by me.

“I am a selfish person, Selena…And as much as I wanted to make sure that you never won the Atonement Trials, I’m secretly glad that you were stubborn and brilliant enough to win it despite all my sabotaging.”
My heart slams against my ribs.
He draws in a deep breath, breathing me in, and tightens his arms around me. “Because it allowed me to have this time with you.”

Today was the first time he used the half-shift since the whipping. His wings had healed completely, and when he spread them wide, they once again looked as powerful and imposing as before. As if nothing had happened. But I know what happened. And I do not forget.

Maybe it’s time that I start doing what they do. What everyone else in this messed up world of ours seems to be doing.
Take what I want and to hell with everyone else.
