It seems to me that if you use a frame narrative, the nested story should be more interesting than the one it's nested in. While the young Roland story is more interesting than the story of Roland's katet holing up for a blizzard, the story nested in young Roland's tale is 150 pages of whatever.

I think one of my problems with this book, relating to the slow pace, is that Roland and his friends are so damn passive, pretty much killing time in Hambry waiting for something to happen. Well, I am also waiting for something to happen.
