Not too sure how I feel about the “quirky narrator” vibe we’re starting with, but I’ll keep reading and see what happens…

All the events in past chapters make it feel like we’re coming to a turning point in the story. A climax. I’m interested to see what happens. If Reva dies in 9/11 and that’s how this ends I’m going to rate this one star. Maybe five.

Some of the motifs/themes are a little overdone. It feels kind of like “okay, I got it, everyone thinks she’s pretty, and that’s why no one checked on her after her parents died.” It is interesting to see the juxtaposition of her caring about Reva while simultaneously *not* caring.

It looks like all these pills are messing with MC’s sense of self. I wonder if they play off each other. It doesn’t surprise me that Trevor’s emotional abuse played such a big role in her emotional development, especially considering her upbringing. I also got the sense that she cares more about Reva than she lets on, so I get the feeling that the train she woke up on is heading to Penn station for the funeral.

Word of the day is “banal.”

Noticed a small discrepancy in a minor detail about the MC’s past. I’m curious if this is supposed to be a subtle hint at an unreliable narrator or if it was a mistake that was overlooked during editing… I am leaning towards the latter, which does take me out of the story a little bit.

As chapter one wrapped up and chapter two unfolds (oh hello little spider), it becomes increasingly clear that our protag. is struggling with severe depression and a deep loneliness that is only amplified by her eccentrically terrible psychiatrist who prescribes her a cocktail of sleeping pills. Many parallels are being drawn between her and her mother. It seems an unloving childhood played quite the role…
