I read this book in a day. Fun, light, and just enough there for a good book discussion.

I stayed up late reading this one. With a hint of sadness, you cheer for April. You want her to see her rise above the tough start she was given. She seems real in a sense of making choices that we wouldn’t make.

Mekiva is reading Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine
Oprah missed an opportunity to claim this one for her book club. Everyone can relate to some aspect of the heroine, perhaps laughing at her innocently witty observations or elements of her loneliness. Readers will certainly sympathize for her and cheer her successes. It starts slow, but still engaging, and feels rushed at the end. Realistically, more time in therapy would be needed to work through her trauma.

This is dragging longer than necessary. Here's an example:
We were eating corn dogs in my car, parked at the Sonic Drive-In, where the carhops were roller skates and brought the food to your car on trays. (114)
This is sufficient detail for establishing the scenery and context for this fast food chain. It's the next two lines that I question their inclusion in the text (other than to make this book longer).

Lucy is getting on my nerves. I cannot empathize with her complaints of inconvenience during the early stages of the pandemic. I enjoyed her character more in the previous book I've read, but she reeks of privilege. I hope she becomes more compassionate and less self-absorbed as the novel progresses. I also hope the author deals with all the major historical events that took place during the pandemic.

I'm halfway done with this novel, and it's going in the DNF pile. It's the content (presentation of it) and the author that's just a NO for me.

Great book perfect for middle grade (6th), especially for those wanting to diversify their class texts. The narrator’s voice and perspective is authentic. I actually like that the mom doesn’t fit the traditional role and definition society places on mothers. It’s a reality for some that is worthy of exploring just as much as the US history of the setting is complicated and worth teaching.

Boys Go to Jupiter--5/5 stars
I am growing to appreciate Evans's writing style and her ability to create well developed, deeply flawed characters within the limitations of the short story. Quite compelling to have me actually sympathize for characters I initially felt otherwise. Recommend this book for this story alone.

Loved Richard of York and parts of Happily Ever After. I didn't get the ending of the later.
