Brute death, the enemy of tenderness,
timeless mother of grief
[...]
You have bereft the world of gentlest grace,
of all that in sweet ladies merits praise;
in youth's gay tender years
you have destroyed all love's light-heartedness.
(page 14)

tenderness.............sweet ladies...........gay........love...........Dante is really providing for the gays in this huh

"Let me say that from that time on Love governed my soul, which became to readily betrothed to him and over which he reigned with such assurance and lordship given him through the power of my imagination that it became necessary for me to tend to his every need." (page 4)

"Kayo, I think I am beginning, and I do mean just beginning, to find myself--you realize that I MUST find my own self and be something or someone, no necessarily in any concrete manner, but in a personal manner--However, I am growing, and I am doing it alone--perhaps you feel excluded but it can only happen alone...I need to feel the growth in one sharp way." Eugene is the best part of the show and he's the best part of the comics, too.

I have never been a nag. I have always been rather proud of my un-nagginess. So it pisses me off, that Nick is forcing me to nag. [...] And Nick's not doing anything anymore, so I have to nag, and it pisses me off: You are turning me into what I never have been and never wanted to be, a nag, because you are not living up to your end of a very basic compact. Don't do that, it's not okay to do. (page 85)

I go on dates with men who are nice and good-looking and smart--perfect-on-paper men that make me feel like I'm in a foreign land, trying to explain myself, trying to make myself known. Because isn't that the point of every relationship: to be known by someone else, to be understood? He gets me. She gets me. Isn't that the simple magic phrase? (page 29)

What does it say about our culture that the desire for weight loss is considered a default feature of womanhood? (137)

It is startling to realize that even Oprah, a woman in her early sixties, a billionaire and one of the most famous women in the world, isn't happy with herself, her body. (139)

I deny myself so much, and still there is so much desire throbbing beneath my surfaces. (147)

Your body is subject to commentary when you gain weight, lose weight, or maintain your unacceptable weight. [...] This commentary is often couched as concerns, as people only having your best interests are heart. They forget that you are a person. You are your body, nothing more, and your body should damn well be less. (pg 120-121)

In some ways it feels like the weight just appeared on my body one day. I was a size 8 and then I was a size 16 and then I was a size 28 and then I was a size 42.

In other ways, i was intimately aware of every single pound that accumulated and clung to my body. And everyone around me was also intimately aware. (pg 116)

Apparently, according to my family lore, I am supposedly related to the actress Mary Pickford and after hours of searching, I found an Elizabeth Pickford Firth in our direct bloodline...so, yes, I will reading any and all books pertaining to Mary Pickford in 2019 to see if I can scrounge anything up. Just a warning...

No single line I have read of this book has affected me more than this one. No single line I have read of this book has been more true for me than this one.

"It's not wrong," Celia said. "It shouldn't be wrong, to love you. How can it be wrong?"
"It's not wrong, sweetheart. It's not. [...] It's just that there's not much we can do about it." (p 172)

You wonder what it must be like to be a man, to be so confident that the final say is yours. (p 180)

"Everyone's dying sweetheart. You're dying, I'm dying, that guy is dying."
She points to a middle-aged man walking a fluffy black dog. (page 24)

These couple of lines made me SCREAM. Imagine seeing someone in real life just point at you and tell you that you're dying lmao

And while he slumbered and breathed in the perfume of the wondrous Valley the Spirit of Happiness crept into his heart and drove out all terror and care and misgivings. Never more would the face of Claus be clouded with anxieties; never more would the trials of life weigh him down as with a burden. The Laughing Valley had claimed him for its own. (page 31)
