i have beef with the concept of turning villainous women into victims so i'm not really treating it as a circe retelling but just enjoying the fact that miller can actually write

girl i'm not even 10 pages in, what the hell is that.....

a slog, sadly.... too impersonal and military-focused for my taste, and also not well-structured imo. like, first mention of Pericles is: "Pericles, holding his eighth Generalship, agreed to help the Milesians". ??

okay i know this is a condescending thing to write but i was kinda scared the prose would not be good bcs it's ya and a bit trope-y (no hate!) but i was pleasantly surprised, the prose is nice, dramatic but not cringe-inducing, and the metaphors don't feel forced

ugh why did i even pick it up why did i think i could handle it

not to sound misogynistic but wow does it benefit kingfisher's story when there's no woman pov and so she's not trying to self-insert as relentlessly. also i really enjoy piper's character

don't search "woolf" in this book or you'll spoil yourself the ending just like i did..... not that it was that unexpected but still
