I am listening to the audio version of this book. It is not read by DMX, but by a voice actor who uses his cadence and voice. Listening at 1.5x speed, I have to say, is delightful. It’s cool to hear about Earl Simmons’ life, and to learn about how he became who he is. This book was released in 2003, arguably at the height of his success… I would love to hear how the next 18 years of his life went in his words

Ok ok, so I don’t hate it

I’m trying to read books my daughter is into… she told me the entire plot and I watched the show and I almost thought I already read this. Instead, I realized I reread the awful first pages 5 times trying to get past them. I may stick with this… I may not

I am honestly trying to read this book but it's pretty awful. Maybe it is just too close to the teenager voice for me to enjoy it, since I dislike teenagers... Or maybe it's just not good. I probably won't finish it but I'll give it a couple more chapters before I give up

I'm loving this one so far. Peterson explains things in this meandering way that is super appealing... He supports all of his premises with research and I feel like this might be one of those game-changing books for me.

This book would benefit from a careful editor. I got through the first chapter, but I couldn't read any more. It was pretty bad. Clunky, hard to follow, characters weren't super interesting. I feel terrible for leaving a bad review, but YIKES.

I haven't met my goal of 52 books this year, but I have read the same 5 kids books to my kids probably a hundred times, so that counts?

I am effing loving this book. I have been a Roots fan since Things Fall Apart, have reached back into their discography and loved them from beginning to end. I am so enthralled with Questlove. I already thought he was a genius... this book is just upping the ante. <3 <3

Kind of love this book so far. It jumps around a lot but the voice is so familiar/memorable/relatable to me.

Compelling & very interesting. I love the way that several threads are woven together. It's entertaining and educational.
