I'm being a little harsh here, but Chapter 1 is literally just "white guy discovers that the government isn't always right."
To give him some credit, he does say that he learned these lessons "embarrassingly late in life."
I thought I would disagree with his viewpoints more, seeing that he's a "Conservative Christian," but honestly, he was spitting facts.
"Only as ambition wanes does education become a possibility."

Bacevich is an interesting guy, to say the least.
-Self-described "Catholic Conservative"
-Prof at Boston University
-"A persistent, vocal critic of the US occupation of Iraq"
-Retired career officer in the Armor Branch of the US Army
-Son died fighting in the Iraq War
-Signed an open letter against inviting Ukraine into NATO
-"I am a conservative, not a Republican. The Republican party is not conservative."

Like many others have pointed out, Small Boat is quite a recursive novel. For some, this recursion may have emphasized the novels key themes and allowed for introspection, but, I found it to be quite unproductive and boring. So far this is a 3/5.

Also, I would love to hear more about Julien's character. So far he is shaping up to be an interesting foil to the narrator.
