Pynchon’s read his Joyce—heliotrope, opening quote referencing metempsychosis, reference to Joyce in Zürich.
A lot of this is intentionally off-putting and the farcical bits are eye-roll-inducing. I enjoyed the parts during the war, but that’s slowly ground to a halt since entering the Zone and at the midpoint it’s a slog. Probably this is meant to echo the arch of a V2?
